Drip: Rough Draft

I think that this accurately represents what I want to convey based on my last blog post.
I am still working on the layout for my two-page spread. During my peer review it was said that I should include my hand drawn drip. logo in my layout.

Still experimenting

In My Feelings: A collection of thoughts

What I want my magazine to portray

  • I want my magazine to be for anyone
My magazine breaks the stereotype of the typical fashion magazine because t does not use models that are typical 5'7 and frail. A model for drip. is a magazine is that is inclusive, anyone can be model for drip. By breaking this stereotype I am expanding my audience. In doing so, I think I achieve my goal for inclusivity.

In the delimitation of model diversity, it allows me to make drip. a safe place for teens to be okay with being themselves. This adapts my magazine to my audience. Typical fashion magazines create an unreachable standard for beauty. Models for drip. will optionally wear makeup. I chose to do this because don't want a model to look perfect. This makes my model more vulnerable allowing them to be themselves. In doing so, I hope that the readers know that it is okay to be themselves and that beauty comes in many forms.

  • I want it to be light-hearted and fun
I intend to convey this through the use of bright colors, geometric shapes, and fun facial expressions.
I also will use several different fonts to make my magazine seem more fun.

Content

  • Relateable
I want the content to be relatable to the experience of being a teenager/ young adult. I intend to do this by using my genre representation research as a guideline. I also want to portray this by addressing the process of finding oneself and understanding who they are and what they stand for. I will mention the use of social media because it is essential in order to understand my target audience.

  • Variety
There needs to be variety to make my magazine more dynamic. My magazine has to be different than other fashion magazines, there has to be a defining factor that sets my magazine apart from others. I will do this by realistically thinking about how my audience is thinking about a topic that I address. This allows me to realize the delimitation in my access to my audience, I go to a school full of 5000 students so this gives me the ability to truly understand young adults. Also being a teenager helps, in understanding my audience.

Genre Representation: Young Adults

Young adults ages (15-25) are my target audience.

The following is a list of my things popular among my target audience with ways to integrate them into my magazine.

Netflix
Netflix is the most popular streaming service among my target audience. I always hear people say "I don't have anything to watch on Netflix." Maybe I can include a list of recommended shows to watch on Netflix.

Snapchat
Snapshat is a service that is extremely popular within my target audience. I create a filter for Drip on Snapchat or I can create brief videos on dressing well and post them to Snapchat. Which is commonly done by other magazines like Cosmopolitan and Elle.

Instagram
Instagram is one of the most popular forms of social media. My magazine is more focused on visuals so think that Instagram is a good platform post content. Content being an outfit or a photoshoot, or just me talking about the process of a magazine.

Twitter
Twitter is form of social media in with the majority of my audience get their news. I could make ads and post them onto Twitter.

Music
I can ask a group of people within my target audience about their favorite artist and style people for my magazine based of the style of the their favorite artist.

10 Steps to Understanding Personal Style

This is a practice editorial.

1. It's all about you!
A good look is wearing a personalizes version of what you like and looking confident in it. You can find inspiration from social media, magazines, street style, or history.

2. Be practical
Set a budget. What I like to do is set a budget. I limit myself to spending $120 on a shopping trip.  Buy what you think you need. Buy something that you can wear anywhere rather than something you would only wear once.

3. Don't be defined by labels.
It's okay to wear labels but don't become an advertisement. A part of dressing well is looking for what suit you. Labels can be worn with other clothing integrated into your personal style.

4.  Be frugal.
When shopping on a budget limit the amount you spend per item. I try to spend $15 and under, but I am willing to make an exception for a cute jacket. The best items ( the ones on sale) are always at the back of the store. Shopping is worthwhile when you save more. You would be surprised at what you can find in the sale section, the gem of any clothing store.

5. Try it
What looks good on the mannequin may not look good on you. We all have different body types. Are clothes should represent our shape. We shouldn't have to squeeze into something that does not fit us.  What is important is trying on items to see what looks best on your figure.

6.  Be Creative!
When creating a good outfit it is good to add a piece with your personal flair to it.  I like adding my ripped jacket with patches to my favorite concert shirt to make my outfit more interesting. For styling a denim jacket you can add pearls, or patches, buttons, paint, lace or tule. For the non-artsy person, I recommend adding buttons and patches. For someone handy with a needle and thread I recommend sewing on some lace or tule ruffles or pearls. An artsy person can paint a design onto a jacket. Or you could try this your self or ask someone you know to do this for you.

7. Think about quality.
When buying clothing you should take quality into account. This is the major exception to your budget. If you think a $30 item will last our more than three years it is worth the extra $15 dollars. If your budget is higher than this than you can splurge on a couple designer items.

8. Style evolves.
Trends change our style changes with it. It's good to integrate new trends into our personal style. A part of having good personal style is being able to a personal touch to clothes you find anywhere.

9.  A good outfit makes you smile. :)
The reason why I dress well is that it makes me feel good. People drink coffee to help them get through the day. Dressing well is my Monday morning pick-me-up. This is why I think finding your personal style is so important. To me, it gives me added confidence and is a daily necessity.

10. Anyone can dress well.
Dressing well is not confined to fashion influencers. This is something for anyone. I hope these tips helped.

Personal Style: Practice Editorial

Personal Style is about the way you dress and how confident it makes us feel. Dressing well as its root is finding what you like and adapting it to your personal style. It okay to dress like someone else but it is better to find the items that suit you. Which brings us to the question: What suits you?

Whether it is looking at someone on the street or finding a good outfit while flipping through a magazine, research is important in finding your personal style.  Once you find something you like to ask: what do like about it?

For example, say you like this outfit:

And your favorite part is the jacket with the patches.

This is a jacket that I found a thrift store for $13

Here are my suggestions for shopping for this look. This type of jacket is a varsity jacket. But say you didn't know that.  What I would do is look for something that looks like it. The best place to
look for something like this is H&M. H&M has basic clothing for a cheap price. What you can do is buy a jacket from here for $6 and add patches/buttons to it.
My favorite website for buttons and patches is called Strange Ways. They are an edgy and fun website that sell buttons/patches at an affordable price.

The Beginnings: My Two Page Cover Story

So earlier this week I started to draft my two- page cover story. One major problem that  I am encountering is that I am worried about the originality in what I say. How do I offer a new perspective on something that is heavily written about? I hope that in my interview I receive more content in responses to my questions so that it makes this article more easy to write.

PLAN
subject to change

  • Create gather pictures of poses that the interviewee can do (Monday)
  • Ask interviewees to their first and last name
  • Ask interview questions Tuesday and Wednesday
  • A take a picture of the interviewee (with permission)
  • Create a list of what information I want to use in my cover story
  • Add to Two Page Cover Story draft
  • Spend Thursday and Friday revising edits
  • Finalize Cover Story
  • Create sample layouts
  • Finalize sample layout
  • Create sample layouts for the magazine in general

The Interview: Questions to be asked

  1.  What does dressing well mean to you?
  2. Does dressing up for school give up your confidence? If yes, how so?
  3. How do you determine what you wear?
  4. How would you describe your style?
One thing that worries me is that I am shy and this process seems kind of scary to me. But I am willing to step out of my comfort zone for the sake of my magazine.

                                                    Wish me good luck

Layout From Monday's Shoot

Here is a sample layout for my magazine. I have gotten good reviews from my friends that have seen it. But I still need to make more samples to compare.

I also took did another shoot yesterday. I still need to include pictures of more people. Something for next week's blog post.

Wish me good luck

Monday’s Shoot 📷

On Monday, I did a practice shoot for my magazine and here are the results. I think don’t think that I want to use this for my magazine.  It looks okay. I don’t want people to think that this issue sets the precedent for the whole magazine. I want people to think that this is a magazine for anyone that likes fashion, not just for people of a certain group of people. I know that I want to another shoot to compare. What do you think?

Magazine Peer Review

Hey guys so on Thursday (March 7, 2019) I had a peer review on my magazine/blog and here is a basic outline about what was said:

It would be best to do to a two-page spread for my Table of Contents(TOC) based on this design:
Furthermore,  they suggested that I should spread out the layout for the TOC and include subtitles for each category like this.

Dressing up for school as a mode of self-expression.
This could be a possible two-page spread about how dressing up for school makes students feel, I would conduct around four to six interviews.

Dressing Up with a Dress Code.
It was also recommended that I talk about how middle schoolers embellish their polo and khaki uniform whether it be through adding a nice jacket or new kicks.

Finding Models
So going into the peer review I had no clue about how I would get models for my magazine, it was recommended that I ask anyone with a good outfit if I could take a picture of them.

Outfits as a diagram.
For this, I would add little blurbs to areas of the outfit and explain their relationship to the model's personal style. I can't believe that I didn't think of this idea!  The people in my peer review group you guys were such a big help, thank you, guys. It's always good to get a second opinion on things!

The eternally grateful
Alexa :)

Mag Goals: Harper's Bazaar

Harper's Bazaar is America's first fashion magazine.
They serve to inspire the outfits of their subscribers.
Image result for harper's bazaar

Harper's Bazaar in an article called 11 Cute Spring Work Outfits they have a woman wearing the latest spring trends and places to buy the components of their outfits along with other affordable ways to purchase look like the ones shown in the photos. I think I can do this with clothes in my own closet in combination with photos that will take of my classmates. I want the clothes to be $50 and under to match the budget that students have to shop on.

They also have pictures of street fashion of people going to Paris Fashion Week. The originality of their outfits allows them to clearly show their confidence. I am not saying this from experience but, I think the fun from attending Paris Fashion Week not only comes from seeing the latest designs from the world's best designers but dressing up for the event.
The idea of dressing up as a way of increasing self-confidence is something that I would like to convey in my magazine. In my magazine, I want to interview my fellow students to figure out how dressing up for school effects their day.  How does it make them feel? and why they do it.

For me, dressing up is another mode of self- expression that makes me feel confident and happy even when my day is not going so well. So it will be interesting to see what other's think about this topic.
NOTE TO SELF: Write a list of interview questions

I found another article called

Smart Shopping: Urban Chic telling HBM subscribers how to dress based on a look. I could do something like this through composing various outfits based on personal styles like Edgy Grunge, Sporty, Preppy, or Minimalistic.

Table Of Contents Layout Research

My goal for my table of contents is something simple but still aesthetically pleasing.
I'm worried that if I do something too abstract for my table of contents, would look too confusing.

So, I did some research and here is what I found:

By using gradients in magazine design it not only creates intrigue but it creates a calming effect.
I think that I can use a gradient for my Table of Contents but I want to add pictures to my magazine. Pictures give more background as to what I will mention in my fashion magazine.

I also found another magazine that uses tabs to organize the Table of Contents into separate sections.  I thought that this was a creative idea but I don’t think it would be a viable idea for my magazine. Although, I could color code my magazine according to sections like fashion and trends, beauty, tips, and current events. I also plan on adding subtitles to each section but I am not sure what they will be yet. Something to think about...

I also liked layouts that integrated text into the images. I thought this was a dynamic way to integrate text into the information for the Table of Contents.

All in all, I think that I need to more research on TOC Layouts before I decided on my final one.
Expect updates!!

Stay weird :)
